Early on, Lisa and Jim decided to keep their wedding small, with a guest list of fewer than 60 friends and family. “We were so lucky to have my sister-in-law, Emma McCormick, work with us throughout our entire planning journey,” says Lisa. Emma, a Vancouver Island-based wedding planner brought the couple's vision to life.
Lisa and Jim were also lucky to have access to a family property for their summer ceremony and reception. “With the cost savings of the venue and the small guest list, we were able to splurge on food, drinks and décor,” says the bride.
To bring this backyard wedding from typical to elegant, Emma and the couple chose a rose gold colour palette and pulled in glamorous touches like gold chairs, chandeliers, a gold sequin table runner, champagne favours and candles throughout the white flowy, tented reception.
Toque Catering set up a gourmet macaroni and cheese station with toppings like lobster and sautéed onions served in martini glasses for cocktail hour. After that, guests were treated to a plated three-course dinner. “It was a beautifully sunny day,” says Lisa, adding “one of my favourite parts of the evening was being able to look down the rows of tables and see all of our loved ones chatting and celebrating with each other.”

“I definitely recommend working alongside a planner. Even if one isn't in the budget for the whole process, day-of coordinators are also a huge asset and take away a huge amount of stress.” (Lisa wanted her sister-in-law to enjoy the wedding as well, so Emma brought in a day-of coordinator from her company to oversee the day.)
“Consider a smaller guest list in order to be able to include everything you want — like that must-have photographer, the plated dinner, the draped tent, or the extra few nights in the ocean front hotel.”
