Marrying at Whistler’s Nita Lake Lodge meant a full weekend of celebrating
When Derek proposed to Karine in Paris in June 2013, by the time the couple was on the plane home, they had already settled on marrying at Nita Lake Lodge in Whistler.
“We love spending time in Whistler, and liked the idea of a weekend celebration with our guests in a destination that was easy to get to and where everyone could stay in one location,” says Karine. “The Lodge is beautiful and luxurious, yet it is also casual and laid-back, and we knew our guests would love it.”
Once home in Vancouver, Karine and Derek met with Nita Lake Lodge and wedding planner Erin Bishop at Filosophi Events to start organizing their wedding for the following August. Erin also introduced the couple to Evan Orion of Vancouver’s Flowerz, who helped design the look of the reception and provided full floral and décor services.
“The wedding weekend was everything we could have dreamed of,” says Karine. “It was beautiful, fun, and allowed us to spend meaningful time with all of our guests over the course of the entire weekend.”
The couple kicked off the festivities in Whistler with a Friday-night barbecue for all their guests. On Saturday morning, they arranged a yoga class to get everyone relaxed for the big day ahead. “Neither us nor our families or friends had any work to do as Erin and Evan were leading the charge, so we all got to enjoy the day.”
The outdoor ceremony in the Lodge’s porte-cochere was stunning thanks to the spectacular mountain backdrop. Immediately after the ceremony, the couple joined their guests basking in the sunshine and view of Nita Lake while enjoying champagne and canapés. The reception then took place in the ballroom, which had been completely transformed from a dark, cavernous room into a white and airy space through the use of draping, uplighting, silver Chiavari chairs, lounge furniture and a white dance floor – accented with tall fuchsia and magenta centrepieces. “The room was dreamlike, and it was amazing to see our vision become a reality,” says Karine.
Following a dinner that impressed even the foodies in the crowd, plus speeches and dessert, the room turned into one big dance party into the early hours. Other highlights of the night included a photobooth and a midnight buffet featuring a poutine bar and sliders.
When the night ended, Derek and Karine headed up to their suite for a glass of champagne while guests who wanted to continue the party went swimming in the lake. “To this day, people still talk about how fun of a party it was and how good the music was.”
On Sunday morning, the couple enjoyed a leisurely farewell brunch on the patio of the Lodge’s restaurant with their guests before leaving on their honeymoon in Maui.
“Looking back on our wedding, it was magical and one of the best days of our lives,” says Karine. “It brought the two of us closer together, and was a great opportunity for our families to spend more time together and get to know one another. And, best of all, I got to marry my best friend, and I can’t wait to grow old with him.”
